Kidston is located in the Etheridge district of North Queensland. At one stage Kidston was the biggest gold producer in Queensland. It still has an operational mine run by Kidston Gold Mines, with living quarters provided to workers by the mine.

Licensees of the Shamrock Hotel were George Daley and Susannah Ryan, who held the license from around 1914 until 1927, then again for a period after 1947. The hotel was situated on the corner of Parallel and Boulder Streets, on miner's leases no. 114 and 222 Oaks Goldfield. (Description supplied with photograph)
