Fremantle Prison was built with convict labour as the Convict Establishment between 1851-1859. It closed as a prison in 1991 and is now a museum dealing with the history of the UK-to-Western Australia convict transportation system, and its history as a state prison. The main gatehouse was built in 1854-55. Its iron gates were fashioned from material salvaged from local shipwrecks. The gatehouse was restored in 2005 when non-original rendering was removed to reveal the original limestone construction. Stone used to build the complex was quarried on site.
