Horses and jockeys in barrier position at the racecourse in Charleville. The first barrier stalls were installed in southern Queensland at Charleville by Charlie Phillot of Wallal Station in September, 1949.

And there's a good chance that the losers would have been known to the jockeys in advance of the race. "He's not running" was a common enough piece of whispered advice about race entrants - if one knew the right people, of course.
