John Petrie (1822-1892) was thrice mayor of Brisbane and held many other important offices in Brisbane, including chairman of the Board of Water Works and chairman of the management committee of the Brisbane Hospital. In 1848, he became sole proprietor of the family building and contracting business which was responsible for many of the buildings in Brisbane. His son, Andrew Lang, became manager in 1882 and the reconstructed firm, John Petrie & Son, concentrated on cabinet making and joinery, brick and tile making and monumental masonry (Information taken from: Australian dictionary of biography, v. 5, 1974).
