This monument is dedicated to Mrs. Mary Watson. Mrs Watson was the wife of Captain R.F. Watson, a beche-de-mer fisherman of Lizard Island. In September 1881, while her husband was away fishing, Mrs. Watson was attacked by aboriginals. Mrs. Watson, her infant son and a Chinese servant escaped in a boiling down tank to Number 5 Island where they perished of dehydration. Their remains, with Mrs Watson's diary, were eventually found in 1882. The monument was erected and at one time was used as a water fountain.
