The Upper Broadwater State School opened in 1904 with 21 pupils. It was the first school north of Stanthorpe within the shire, and was situated near Jolly's Falls. It opened as the Broadwater Provisional School and later became the Upper Broadwater State School, while another school opened southwest of Stanthorpe called the Broadwater State School. The first teacher was Herbert Saville Moss, a veteran of the Boer War. In the back row, left to right, are Jim Tennant, Haggie Doyle, Martha Jolly, Lillian Tennant, Herbert Moss, Gent? Chapman, Con Doyle, Charlotte Stonebridge and Jack Doyle. The front row, left to right, are Len Tennant, Arthur Doyle, Susie Chapman, Charlie Doyle, Alex Stonebridge, Arthur Jolly, Vera Matthews Irene Chapman, Vivian Chapman, Albert Jolly, Jim Jolly, Ned Matthews and Lillie Stonebridge.
