William Butler was appointed manager of Kilcoy Station in 1871, which was owned by the Hope family. He was associated with Kilcoy for the next 50 years. In 1882 the Hopes returned to England, leaving Kilcoy Station under Butler's supervision. At Kilcoy, Butler established excellent relationships with local Aborigines. After his death a Kilcoy street was named after him and this monument erected in his honour.
