An al fresco lunch - from L-R: the dental mechanic (Mr Hough), his wife, and the dentist. Mrs Hough did the cooking on the tour. [Description supplied with photograph] In 1926 the School Dental Service was expanded to provide treatment to children in remote areas of Queensland. A mobile dental clinic was bought to travel the roads in western regions. The one-ton vehicle had to carry dental equipment, tents, water and food, as well as the means to repair the truck and extricate it from bogs on bad roads. The clinic went from Thargomindah to Burketown and Normanton serving places on the way. In 1928 the first rail dental clinic was established on the Atherton Tableland from Cairns.
