Springboks and Wallabies in the mud, Sydney, 1937
contributed by QldPics, taken in 1937
(contact QldPics about this picture)

The first Rugby Union Football Test match between Australia (Wallabies) and South Africa (Springboks) in Sydney on Saturday, because of the muddy field, developed into a battle between the giant forwards, and this scene is typical of the struggle that was waged throughout the game. The match was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground. (Description taken from photograph.)
In 1929 when New Zealand toured Australia, the first official Australian Jersey was introduced - an emerald green jersey with the Australian Coat of Arms and green leg socks with green and gold bars on the top. When South Africa toured Australia in 1937, the Australian jersey was changed to white with green and gold hoops. This uniform remained until 1961 when it became gold for the Australian tour of South Africa. It has remained predominantly gold every since.
