Burnie is located just off the Romaine Creek in northwest Tasmania a distance of about 230km north-northwest from Hobart (show me). Burnie has a population of around 18,000 and is one of the larger towns in Australia. Burnie is at an elevation of approximately 25m above sea level. Burnie is one of the northernmost cities in Tasmania. The nearest ocean is the Southern Ocean about 100km west-southwest of Burnie.

The nearest more populous place is the city of Devonport which is 40km away with a population of around 22,000 (show me a map with Burnie and Devonport).

The centre of Burnie is at the intersection of the Bass Highway and the Mount Road.
