Stromatolites, formed by cyanobacteria, and said to be up to 3,500 years old, line the edges of the lake.
As a life-form, the cyanobacteria that form stromatolites are regarded as earth's oldest, dating from around 3.5 billion years ago. There are several sites where stromatolites or the similar thrombolites thrive in WA, including Lake Thetis, Shark Bay and Lake Clifton, south of Mandurah.

Thriving in water 1.5 times saltier than the ocean, the cyanobacteria which form thrombolites and stromatolites like this one, are not subject to predation. Only tiny shrimp and other minuscule creatures can survive in the conditions.
