Pontville was sighted by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1821 and was once considered a possible site for the capital of Van Dieman's Land. With this in view a Military Garrison was established and this building was the Officers' Quarters, built in 1824. It is now holiday units and known as Lythrow's Row.

These houses may have been built with a view to Pontville becoming the administrative centre for Van Dieman's Land.

This unusually designed St Mark's Anglican Church was built in 1841. The churches are the most substantial building left standing in Pontville.
