|1 - Radford House - 86 High St, Stanthorpe (Contributed by: HistoryBuff)|
Robert & Harriet Radford purchased the property on 4 June 1885 from James Thompson. Robert was born on 2 July 1837 to Thomas & Jenny Radford in Royton, Lancashire, England. Robert worked as a shoemaker in his family's business in Royton, Lancashire, England until they departed for Australia in 1862. They arrived in Brisbane on 1 Nov 1862 and settled in Stanthorpe. There are no records of him living in Brisbane or other region. Upon purchasing the property in 1885 it was noted that he was already a resident of Stanthorpe and may have owned other property in the region before this. They had three children Sarah Jane Radford born January 1862 in England (married Frederick William Perkins and their descendants are still in Stanthorpe today); Thomas Radford born 2 Jan 1865 in Stanthorpe (moved away to Victoria); and Mary Alice Radford born 10 Nov 1869 in Stanthorpe (married Henry Bott whose descendants also are still in Stanthorpe today).
Mary Alice Bott inherited the property after her father passed away on the 24 September 1916. She lived in the home until Sep 1949 at the age of 80 years then sold the home to Salvatore Patti on 29 Sep 1949. Mary passed away a year later.
"Old Man Patti" as he was aptly named purchased the property in 1949 and ran a shop from the current shop location from 1949 through to the 1970's. His name was Salvatore Patti and was born in Sicily in about 1883 who emigrated to Australia from Sicily in 1909. He married Angela Puglisi and they were farmers & orchardists from Ballandean. His brother Alfio emigrated in 1913 and was also noted as an orchardist from Ballandean. He married Lucia Patane, all of which are long standing local names.
I have heard many stories from people mentioning that this was the best fruit shop in the region and as young children they would go and buy their lollies from this shop in the 1950's.
"Radford House" as it has been named because of the founding family who lived in this home for two generations forover 60 years. Let their name live on as they were not mentioned at all in history books related to Stanthorpe which is disappointing.
