Meekatharra The Great Northern Highway is the main street of Meekatharra. The Royal Mail Hotel has a link with Charles Kingsford Smith who once had a mail run from Carnarvon.

On the Great Northern Highway, Meekatharra is the largest town on the Murchison goldfields. The main building in town is the Royal Mail Hotel that has a special link with Charles Kingsford Smith who once had a mail run from Carnarvon.

Meekatharra Gold was discovered in 1894. The State Battery operated on this site from 1904 to 1994.

Gold was discovered in 1894 and the town grew slowly to 75 people in 1901, then to 2,404 in 1911. Many mines operated around the town that were served by a State Battery from 1904 to 1994. Now dismantled only a few relics remained at the time of my visit.

Meekatharra The Court House dating from the early 1900s, long abandoned but in the process of restoration.

The Court House dating from the early 1900s remained abandoned for many years but was in the process of being restored.

Meekatharra St Oswalds Anglican Church. 1909.

St Oswalds Anglican Church built in 1909 is still in use. Built of corrugated iron it provides a comment on the importance of the spiritual life when compared to the Royal Mail Hotel.

Meekatharra The Catholic Nunnery now no longer in use as such and boarded up.

There must have been an active ministry by Catholic Nuns in years gone by, but today the Nunnery is deserted and closed off with sheets of corrugated iron.

Meekatharra The Freemasons Lodge.

The Freemasons Lodge also is of corrugated iron, and is their style, has only small high windows providing limited light and ventilation. One wonders who the members survived on hot summer nights.
