Picture of / about 'Brisbane' Queensland - Old Queensland Museum, William Street, Brisbane, Queensland, ca. 18852 - Old Queensland Museum, William Street, Brisbane, Queensland, ca. 1885 (Contributed by: QldPics)
Erected in 1877-79, this building in William Street first served as the Queensland Museum. In 1902 it was converted into the Public Library of Queensland (renamed the State Library of Queensland in 1971). Designed by George Curtis Walker, the building is made of brick and sandstone, and has eight second-storey columns along the front facade. The Queensland Museum moved to the Exhibition Building premises at Herston in 1899, and later to the Cultural Centre at South Brisbane.

A Kanaka boy employed by J.C. Heussler ((Description supplied with photograph). He is wearing a suit and tie and standing near a desk with ornate engraving on the legs and sides. South Sea Islanders were recruited as a source of labour in Australia from as early as the 1840s.

Picture of / about 'Brisbane' Queensland - Normal School, Brisbane, ca. 18854 - Normal School, Brisbane, ca. 1885 (Contributed by: QldPics)
View from the street of the Normal School, Brisbane. The Normal School was established as the National School in April 1860, and was conducted as a co-educational school until the opening of a boys' building in December 1862. The school building was designed by Christopher Porter and built by Andrew Petrie. Christopher Porter arrived in Brisbane in 1860, and was invited by the Queensland Board of Education to tender for the position as the Board's first general architect.
