Dover Castle Mine

The Dover Castle Tin mine was discovered in 1906 and first worked in 1907. Production was on and off until finally closed in 1965.

The shaft had been sunk to a depth of 180m with very good ore reported from 120m reported to be between 8-10% Sn.

Over a six year period Between 1959 and 1965 a total of 8,320t of Cassiterite ore had been reportedly mined with a head grade of 6.1% Sn.

Mineralisation consists of fine grained disseminated cassiterite, the richest ore occurred in calcite veins.

Mine closed in 1979 and remains unworked to this day.

True credit belongs to Mr William Freeman for discovering the lode and also the first to work the Dover Castle tin mine in 1890.
