The Mountain was named by Samuel Grau Hubbe in 1895-96 when traveling from Oodnadatta and Coolgardie. It was named after Ebenezer Pion Laurie (1845-1916), Chief Draughtsman of the Surveyor-General's Office, Adelaide and a friend of Hubbe.
