Hamper Fund American Tea

Avenel Racecourse showing grandstand & track. Last horse race meeting conducted in 1941. Site used at varying times for athletics, gymkhana, cricket and annual fund raising community BBQ's for funding of the Memorial Hall and Swimming Pool. During World War 2 an air raid shelter dugout was established close to the Northern Boundry.

On Saturday afternoon the Comforts Fund held its annual effort to raise funds to send every district service man or woman a Xmas hamper or canteen order. As there are over 60 to be forwarded, it is quite a big job, when it comes to an effort in aid of the Patriotic Funds of any nature, no call is to great for the generous spirited citizens of Avenel and district. It is less than a month since the school children, aided by the citizens, raised 115 Pounds for War Funds, yet, on Saturday, the same citizens, responded with their cash so liberally that over 80 Pounds was raised. Looking around the various stalls one saw a public-spirited women who work untiringly, and unselfishly every effort that was made for War Funds., Miss Gadd, on who’s shoulders, fell most of the organising work, had all the arrangements perfected and the stall-holders did the rest. The various stalls were very well stocked with goods which were eagerly purchased. The flower display was excellent, the long table in the centre of the hall was a mass of gorgeous blooms, and the judges must have had a difficult task to select the winners.
